Posted on February 19th, 2008 in Gadgets News | Comments Off

The fat lady has sung and Toshiba has left the building. The high-definition DVD format war is now over. Toshiba officially threw in the towel today marking the death of the HD DVD format leading the way to a single format when it comes to high-definition DVD’s. The writing on the wall for Toshiba came in the format of numerous decisions by retail stores and major movie studios to produce and offer movies only in the Blu-ray format.

Naturally, Toshiba made it a point to reassure those who have purchased hd dvd players by stating that it would still continue to support and provide service to players already sold.

Creepy Steampunk Animals Put the “Erm?” in Taxidermy
Lisa Black’s Steampunkish animal mods leave us a little confused. While grafting clockworks onto already expired creatures is probably further up the moral scale than say, battery chicken farming, it still creeps us out.The pictured sculpture is called Fixed-Fawn, and replaces the dear deer’s eye with what looks like a sewing machine bobbin holder. In the gallery you’ll also find the Fixed-Ferret, Fixed-Duckling and the truly horrifying Fixed-Baby Crocodile, a truly Victorian wind-up reptile. There’s even a video on the site showing the little croc ticking. (Read the full post about ‘Creepy Steampunk Animals Put the “Erm?” in Taxidermy’…)

EyeClops Grow Up
Looks like the 2008 line up from EyeClops has just gotten more fun - they might resemble last year’s model, but this time it comes in three different zoom lenses - 100x, 200x and 400x. In addition to the new EyeClops, you get a vacuum cleaner with a detachable top that enables it to be mounted onto any EyeClops, including the new BioniCam model. Perfect for sucking up bugs gently and studying them - something I’ve always wanted to do in Animal Crossing but wasn’t allowed to. The new and improved EyeClops retails for $50 while the Bug Vac goes for $15 this fall. (Read the full post about ‘EyeClops Grow Up’…)

Epoq Quad-Band GSM Wristphone
Calling all three of you Dick Tracy fans! Here’s the Epoq Quad-Band GSM wristphone for you to chat away on a timepiece while looking daft. At least it doesn’t look as corny as previous iterations, featuring the hands of an analog watch on its OLED display. You don’t have to worry about running out of juice anytime soon, since the Epoq EGP-WP88 boasts a built-in kinetic recharge system that converts the wearer’s motion to energy. The EGP-WP88 won’t come cheap though, retailing for $529.95 when available at the end of this month. I’d recommend getting a Bluetooth headset to go along with it. Study: Only 1/3 Of Americans Think Nanotechnology Is Morally Acceptable

Study: Only 1/3 Of Americans Think Nanotechnology Is Morally Acceptable
Nanotechnology—materials, machines and other products fabricated with nanometer-sized components such as single atoms or molecules—is morally unacceptable to most Americans, according to a sampling taken by the University of Winconsin-Madison. Of 1,015 adult Americans polled, only 29.5 agreed that it was acceptable, compared to more than half in European countries. Dietram Scheufele, the university’s proferssor of life sciences communication, claims its due to religious beliefs which inculcate people with a generalized mistrust of science. In this view, even when scientific endeavor produces results with no clear religious implications (unlike, say, evolution or human cloning) it’s simply not on to go around thinking empirically about the natural world.
