by Joshua Topolsky, posted Apr 17th 2008 at 9:02AM We can’t all be as lucky as reader Robert, who’s somehow (we suspect by using money) gotten his hands all over a brand new Mini-Note. At least Robert is a kind man, evidenced by the fact that he’s sent us some terrific shots of him unboxing his new toy. Sega Toys have lifted the veil on its Music Robot ODO that bears a resemblance to the Sony Miuro, making this a more affordable alternative for folks who think that the Miuro is extravagantly priced. The Music Robot ODO does fall short in comparison to the Miuro, where the missing WiFi connectivity and digital camera functions are the most notable ones. Still, it retails for slightly a tenth of the $1,000 plus price point which the Miuro demands, making the lack of features much more palatable. The LCD display shows off the current “mood” of the Music Robot ODO, dancing along to the tempo of the current tune playing. With the included remote control, you will be able to “drive” your tunes pretty much everywhere you go in your home. (Read the full post about ‘Music Robot ODO’…)

Watch this and be amazed. Amazed that Microsoft’s internal publicity team can come up with something so embarrassing it makes watching “The Office” feel like a comfortable experience. It’s hard to believe that this isn’t some kind of joke.

by Donald Melanson, posted Apr 16th 2008 at 12:58PM It’s not quite implantable, but Insound Medical’s new Lyric hearing aid is about as close as you can get, with it designed to squeeze in deep in your ear canal and sit just a few millimeters from your ear drum. That, the company says, not only allows for the wearer to hear much more natural sounds since they don’t have to be amplified as much, but allows them to wear the hearing aid for 24 hours a day. Of course, a device of that size also poses a number of problems, but Insound appears to have all those sorted out, with it employing a special “spongy material” that allows moisture to escape and prevent infection, and a magnet to actually remove the device from the ear. by Nilay Patel, posted Apr 16th 2008 at 1:12PMUh-oh, it looks like wannabe Mac clone maker Psystar has more than one licensing issue with the Open Computer: the company didn’t get permission from developers working on the OSx86 Project to sell their work. Netkas, who developed the EFI emulator Psystar is using, posted up a blog entry yesterday calling Psystar “liars” and has re-released his code under a license that specifically forbids commercial usage. We chatted briefly with Netkas and he told us that not only did Psystar take his code without permission, it’s using other code from the project like the NVInject graphics patch developed by Gotoh, and that he contacted Psystar when he learned about the Open Computer with no results. I guess watching video on a watch is much less conspicuous compared to viewing it on an ipod, especially in an office environment where your perceived performance has a big say in whether you snag that raise you’ve been chasing after or not. ThinkGeek’s solution of the 8GB stainless steel watch is a pretty cool idea, but the 1.8″ 160 x 128 display isn’t anything to shout about. It supports a vast array of formats including AVI, MP4, WMV, ASF, MPG, MPEG, DAT, RM, and MOV. Other features include an integrated voice recorder, a built-in speaker an an earphone jack. $129 for this wonder piece of tech that helps you pass time while you wait for tardy customers/clients. The sheer genius behind this idea can clearly be seen in the handiwork, where an old PowerBook case is transformed into a desktop. Modder Richard Hunt decided that his beat up old PowerBook still had some mileage left in it, and decided to remove its innards and replace the insides with newer, faster parts. Heck, even the original notebook battery was retained, which means you have a somewhat integrated UPS to prevent your data from being wiped out in the event of a power failure. What are some of the other case mods you would like to see? (Read the full post about ‘PowerBook Ends Up As Desktop’…)

PS3 owners seem to be pretty happy these days, with their console being a solid Blu-ray player as Sony intended originally while receiving a whole host of service updates and upgrades to enhance the playing experience. Sony has confirmed that a PS3 video service is always under construction, and will be different from what you know is in the market these days - hopefully the folks at Sony won’t reinvent the wheel just for the sake of being different. There are also plans to allow XMB access in the middle of a game, a feature that has long been available on the Xbox 360 which clearly adds to the latter’s appeal. I wonder with such an improvement, will those sitting on the fence pick the PS3 as their primary home console of choice? (Read the full post about ‘PS3 Video Service, In-game XMB Confirmed’…)
