Sprint’s current lack of support for MMS or PictureMail in their network might be ending soon, as Chief Marketing Officer John Garcia reveals plans that they are working on something with Microsoft for Windows Mobile devices. In a response to a customer’s query, John said: “We’re working with Microsoft to build a PictureMail application that will work on their Windows product to give you a similar experience as our other products. As some of you may be aware, currently, you can actually do this on a Windows product, but you have to do it through e-mail or Bluetooth. We realize this is cumbersome. Yahoo! may be looking to Google as its savior to protect it from a buyout offer from Microsoft, but talks between Yahoo! and Google have caught the attention of the Department of Justice. Reuters is reporting that there is possible concern from regulators about a phone call from Google CEO Eric Shmidt to Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang offering help to protect Yahoo! from the clutches of Microsoft.
There is also concern over the two week test being performed by the two companies. Google initiated a two week test with Yahoo! which includes combining web search and advertising business between them.

Sony is coming up with two new hard-disk (HDD) video recorders named RDX-HX1080 and RDX-HX1090. They both have 500GB of storage space, which the company claims can store up to 1420 hours (of Standard Definition TV recording). They have an integrated DVB-T Tuner (digital broadcasting not used in the U.S) but the 1090 model also has a “normal” analog TV Tuner. Both offer 1080p up-scaling (magnification), but do not record in 1080p (just to be clear). If you own a recent Sony camcorder, you can connect it to the recorder for direct video transfer. As we mentioned just yesterday, and with little surprise Sony Ericsson has officially announced the G502, and I say officially because the folks over at the Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog sort of beat them to the punch with an early announcement. With this there is not much we do not already know, but the G502 is an “affordable” HSDPA candybar style handset that is touting some decent features. The G502 will feature a 2-inch 240 x 320 pixel resolution display, Bluetooth, 2-megapixel camera, an FM radio, RSS support, automatic email setup, Access NetFront Browser, Exchange ActiveSync support and has Google Maps for Mobile pre-installed. This new S2 MP3 player (pictured) by Samsung might be one of the smallest MP3 players ever. Measuring out at 0.65 x 1.62 x 1.66-inches, and only weighing 0.03-pound, it has rightfully earned its nickname, which is Pebble. Basically, the S2 comes with 1GB of internal memory and also an FM tuner. It plays MP3, WMA, and OGG, and comes in a few colors including green, purple, red, black, and white. The battery life on the S2 is pretty nice, although, considering its size, 13 hours isn’t too long on a single charge. However, it only takes 2 hours to fully charge, which isn’t too bad. There are a few buttons on the device, basically just play, pause, volume and playback options. (Read the full post about ‘Samsung debuts new S2 Pebble, S3 MP3 players’…)

If there’s one group of people you don’t want to annoy, it’s bloggers. We have a jittery trigger finger hanging over the “post” button, and a ready audience to whom we can rant. Asus seemingly forgot this when sending out review units of the 9″ Eee PC, and attempted to up its test scores by sneaking in a bigger battery. The standard 4400mAh battery, found in the current incarnation of the Eee, lasts a paltry 1.5 hours. The souped up, 5800mAh model shipped to journalists gives 2.5 hours of use. Still pathetic, but closer to being useful. After the inevitable hissy fits, Asus admitted its “mistake” and is doing the right thing by customers, sending out higher capacity replacement batteries to early buyers. Memory maestros Crucial have started shipping the Lexar Solid State Drives announced in January . The swap-in 2.5″ (notebook sized) drives come in 32GB and 64GB flavors. If you’re looking for one of Crucial’s usual bargains, though, forget it. The 32GB model is $800, and the 64GB version a crazy $1500. This makes Apple’s $1000 option for the macbook air look positively cheap, and you won’t hear us saying that very often. Our advice? Wait it out. The prices are sure to stay the same for a couple of years, but the capacity will grow. Then, when SSDs become commodity goods, we’ll see a drop. Plus, how many BitTorrented movies can you fit on 64GB anyway? (Read the full post about ‘Crucial Shipping SSDs, And They’re Not Cheap’…)

Plat’Home’s tough little OpenMicroServer is designed to survive the earthquake-prone Pacific Rim and deliver reliable, maintenance free networks. We, on the other hand, see it as the beginning of the end for the Nation State. Why? Imagine dropping a consignment of these disaster-proof Linux machines into some unstable dictator-run republic. Now imagine paying a small team of mercenaries to protect the hardware from tinkering and theft. And finally, imagine that you repeat this enough times to make a truly redundant server network. From here you can run banking operations, sell copyrighted music or operate a gambling business. In effect, you short circuit international law, and the distributed network is untouchable.
