MacBook Air Hack Swaps WiFi for EVDO

Posted on April 30th, 2008 in Gadgets News | Comments Off

Jordan Bunnell has put the Air in his macbook air. He cracked the svelte case open and popped in an EVDO card. A Verizon USB727 Aircard, to be precise. Thanks to a few extra USB connections on the Air’s circuit board, Bunnell avoided losing the sole external USB port.

The hack was not done without sacrifice, though. To make room for the card inside the tightly packed case, Bunnell had to remove both the Airport card and the Bluetooth unit. Depending on your point of view, the Mac is now either set free or crippled.

RC-12 Wireless Mini Cam

RC-12 Wireless Mini Cam
The RC-12 Wireless Mini Cam from RF System Lab is not only tiny and has a maximum working range of up to 30 meters, it can even shoot images underwater with the help of a waterproof case, although I wouldn’t think that there would be anyone performing underwater trysts anytime which makes for newsworthy material. After all, if you’re going to explore underwater photography, why not settle for a standard point-and-shoot with a waterproof case? This will be much better suited for on-land use, using a 0.25″ CMOS chip to snap full color images in VGA quality. The RC-12 Wireless Mini Cam retails for $269 each. Sony SRSZX1 2.0 Speaker System
Sony’s SRSZX1 2.0 Speaker System targets the average desktop computer that does not need tubthumping bass, but claims to entertain people with “an enriched sound range and fuller bass sound reproduction”. Meant for casual use where PC gaming, audio and DVD playback are concerned. It comes in an aluminum finish and is accompanied by a compact wireless remote controller. Technological advances include Mobius Duct technology which ‘minimizes wind noise’, Turbo Shift technology for extended bass range and a Sigma-Type magnetic circuit for upgraded sound reproduction. There is no word on pricing, but it shouldn’t be too expensive. (Read the full post about ‘Sony SRSZX1 2.0 Speaker System’…)

Manodo’s screen gives apartment dwellers the 411
by Darren Murph, posted Apr 29th 2008 at 9:44AM Those looking for another good reason to set up camp in Sweden have just found it. Okay, so maybe Manodo’s oh-so-informative display isn’t that astonishing, but it certainly gives a select few apartment residents in the country access to an enviable amount of information. Reportedly, the screen is being installed in several Swedish cities as part of a larger pilot project, and aside from dishing out details about the next available train, who exactly is standing outside their building and how much energy folks are currently consuming, it also serves up data on how many pounds of CO2 you’re responsible for releasing while kicking back in your pad. “Brain pacemaker” could treat depression, OCD
by Nilay Patel, posted Apr 29th 2008 at 1:46AM Sending electrical shocks into the brain via a “brain pacemaker” has already led to dramatic breakthroughs like the revival of a man trapped in a vegetative state for six years, but new research may mean that the technique is soon a common treatment for disorders like depression and OCD. Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic, Mass General, Harvard Medical School and Brown Medical School implanted the Medtronics brain pacemaker into 17 people suffering from depression and tracked them for a year, finding significant improvements in mood as well as social and occupational functioning, while 26 patients suffering from OCD were followed for three years and also showed “marked improvement.” Findings will be presented to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons this week in Chicago, and clinical trials are scheduled for later this year — in other news, sales of “The Terminal Man” to neurosurgeons recently skyrocketed for unknown reasons.ReadPermalinkEmail this45 CommentsFiled under: Misc. Festo AirJelly flies through the air with the greatest of ease
by Paul Miller, posted Apr 28th 2008 at 5:46PM We’d explain this thing, but we’re really having trouble taking our eyes off of it long enough to string some full sentences together. Suffice it to say Festo’s AirJelly is powered by some magical jelly fish properties, a lithium-ion battery, an electric motor and a bit of helium. If that’s not floaty enough for you, there’s also a water version, AquaJelly. Videos of both are after the break.
