If you don’t listen to or watch the TED talks, you are really missing out. They basically get a lot of very smart (mostly high profile) people and give them 17 minutes to talk about what they want. It’s all about improving the world, not making money or getting AMD’s 45nm architecture up and running. In his talk Hector Ruiz walks us through this childhood in Mexico, AMD’s 50×15 program, and a lot more.

Word on the street has it that Verizon will roll out a couple of its highly anticipated advanced smartphones sometime this week. It seems that the blackberry Curve 8330 will make its debut this May 9th, featuring a recommended retail price of $270 after signing a contract and rebate. Those who prefer not to be tied down can always settle for a $440 purchase. As for the Samsung Glyde, this touch screen slider cell phone might also be released on the same date. Rumors abound that the Glyde will be priced higher than the Curve when on contract, sitting on a handsome $300 price tag with a 2-year plan while costing $420 as an individual, contract-less phone. Will you wait for the 3G iphone instead? (Read the full post about ‘Verizon BlackBerry Curve, Samsung Glyde out this month?’…)

ZeeVee has announced the launch of its ZvBox today, bringing yet another consumer electronics product that is used for watching Internet TV, online video or computer content on that spanking new HDTV in your living room. This sounds like a timely device considering the explosion of Internet TV and movie downloads that have so far been confined to the (relatively) small display on your computer - unless you’re one of those folks who prefer working with your PC hooked up to your HDTV. Some other solutions to date haven’t exactly been working out too well in solving this problem as drawbacks include limited content, added subscription fees and the need for a box at each TV. Summer is coming and before you know it, you’ll be out frolicking in the sun without a care in the world. Most people will head for the beaches or lakes, as water-based activities are always a popular choice. Next time you do so, why not bring the Performance Water Cycle along with you? This is the single-seat water cycle that combines the exhilarating experience of riding a recumbent bicycle with the smooth water displacement of an open-topped kayak, allowing you to navigate smoothly around lakes, harbors, and ocean inlets. Appropriate for those wishing for a relaxing cruise or a vigorous workout, the craft has an efficient, smooth pedal crank that uses an 8:1 gear ratio to drive a 15″ two-blade propeller through the water, allowing you to reach a speed of up to 7 MPH–as fast as an Olympic swimmer and faster than typical paddleboats. An aluminum recumbent bicycle frame extends from the hull, providing a sturdy platform for its cushioned adjustable bicycle seat, allowing you to achieve an optimal pedaling position. The cycle frame separates from the hull for easy transport. Highly responsive turning is provided by a rudder controlled by the frame’s adjustable handlebars; stopping and reverse are accomplished by pedaling backward. The craft’s fiberglass-covered, high-density foam core hull is buoyant, seamless, and leakproof, with precisely-balanced integral pontoons for a stable ride, even in waves as high as 3′. Its shallow 17″ draft allows you to pedal into water only 2′ deep. Sounds like the perfect summer toy - only if you have a rather fat bank account, since the Performance Water Cycle will set you back by $2,999.95.

There are many things that the Meaning of Time looks like. Pop-up sprinkler, shelf bracket, vibrator. It is none of these. It is in fact a minimalist clock. A mechanism cut back to its barest essentials, it exists without hands or face. What Bomi Kim’s conceptual plastic widget does have, though, is holes. Two holes into which you can shove the hands of your choice, and two grooves that can be pushed into yet another hole, a face-hole. This is a truly stripped back design, where, as in quantum physics, the hole is as important as the electrons surrounding it. Aside: While hitting up the Google to check my electron hole facts, I came across a site which seems to be a giggling schoolboy’s dream, called Saturn Daily. My Beating Heart. Ostensibly a relaxation device, it is in fact a cynical arrow aimed straight at the hearts of new age saps, the kind of people who might believe that angels actually help them to find a parking space. As if the promise of love isn’t enough, the people behind My Beating Heart have thrown some technology into the marketing mix. Not any tech, mind you, but some of the most up to date buzzwords to be found: Haptics and Artificial Intelligence. My Beating Heart employs new advances in computer science, Artifical Intelligence, and haptic design. But we also developed the technology inside each Heart by combining the practice of meditation and yoga with software and hardware development. Apparently, not only is CompUSA rising from the dead like a horrific, zombified corpse, but now its guts are getting bought up and replaced by another retail behemoth. According to reports, Best Buy has just paid $13.5 million for 17 CompUSA store leases, ranging in time from three to 14 years and totaling 453,000 square feet. If the nightmare of CompUSA wasn’t enough to haunt you in your sleep, the news that its now-defunct locations will be replaced with essentially more of the same should shake you to your very core. by Donald Melanson, posted May 1st 2008 at 1:11PM Detecting emotional cues is hardly a new endeavor, but this so-called Robometer concept device takes a slightly different (but not entirely unique) approach to things, with it actually promising to help you feel happy by prompting you when you stray too far into tediousness. To do that, the rig makes use of a GSR lead to detect your galvanic skin response, along with accelerometers that detect repetitive movement, and a voice sensor that promises to detect repetitive phrases. Those then get translated into various warning levels, with the device ultimately letting out a voice prompt when you’re perilously close to becoming too tense or unhappy.
