UK Almost Runs Out of iPhones

UK Almost Runs Out of iPhones
When Carphone Warehouse and O2 cut the price of the 8GB iPhone last month, it was seen as a move to shift stock before the iPhone’s expected Second Coming this summer. And it worked. The 8GB model quickly sold out. Maybe it worked a little too well. According to the Guardian, Carphone Warehouse is also out of the 16GB model, and 02 has only a few left. Is this an ordering snafu or is there really a Wii-like iPhone drought in progress? The UK Apple Store still lists both models with a ship date of two days. But if there is a shortage, you can be sure that Apple would keep remaining units for itself: The rumor mill would go into overdrive if Apple itself ran out of phones. GreenPix Zero Energy Media Wall

GreenPix Zero Energy Media Wall
Talk about going green - the GreenPix Zero Energy Media Wall might be really huge, comprising of thousands of solar photovoltaic capture cells attached to a grid of glass panels, and yet it won’t sip a single drop of electricity from the power grid. After all, it is fully self-sustainable and was specially constructed to wow visitors to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, being situated in the Xicui entertainment complex located near the site of the games. If only other large screen displays in huge metropolitan areas will use the same kind of display as well - think of just how much cash the local municipal council will be able to save. Taxpayers will be happier as well since they know their money can be redirected elsewhere. (Read the full post about ‘GreenPix Zero Energy Media Wall’…)

BlissLights Laser Wand

Posted on May 5th, 2008 in Gadgets News | Comments Off

BlissLights Laser Wand
I think we all know how much fun a laser pointer can be, but just picture how much fun it would be if you had a device that could make many laser points all at once. I can only assume this was the idea behind creating the BlissLights Laser Wand. This uses what the company calls a “high diffraction efficiency digital holographic optical element”, which creates a shining starfield effect on any wall. Just think of it as a disco ball without the mirror ball or need of reflected light. At first I wondered what to do with device, but these pictures to the left gave me some ideas. It certainly would liven up any party for younger people. (Read the full post about ‘BlissLights Laser Wand’…)

Robotic Giraffe Really Likes to Be Pet
SAN MATEO, California — A seventeen-foot robotic giraffe with webcams in his eyes and special touch-sensitive sensors is proving a crowd pleaser today at Maker Faire. "Hello, my name is Russell," the electric giraffe, aka Rave Raffe, said to a crowd of children. Russell rewarded kids tickling his sensors by saying, "He. He. He. That tickles," and "That feels nice." It’s a little less disturbing than it sounds, as you can see in the video. The whimsical giraffe is the creation of Russell Pinnington, after whom the robot was named, and Lindz Lawlor, who provides the base for its voice. You might have caught earlier versions of the beast at Burning Man over the last couple of years. (Read the full post about ‘Robotic Giraffe Really Likes to Be Pet’…)

Luddite Musician Makes Beats By Hand
Guillermo Galindo plays the Maiz, his home-brewed synthesizer. SAN MATEO, California — Sick of over-produced, souped-up, sample-heavy pop songs? So is Oakland musician Guillermo Galindo, which is exactly why he built the Maiz, a makeshift synthesizer that creates simple sounds and records them. "I wanted to create music that is based on physical sounds," said Galindo. "Not based on artificial effects." Galindo repurposed household items like an old wine crate and deactivated credit cards to build the basic structure of the Maiz. A simple motor rigged to a  motion sensor spins a disk  on the device, which  produces vibrations and tremors that are recorded and amplified by a computer.
