Lego V8 32-Valve Engine

Lego V8 32-Valve Engine
Is there nothing Lego cannot build? Guess not, as some hardcore Lego fans have managed to come up with an actual working electronic V8 engine that was created entirely from Lego Technic pieces. It took the inventor approximately half a year to come up with this, but I must say, the result is stunning to say the least. Good thing it doesn’t need any grease to run as things could get really messy from there onwards. (Read the full post about ‘Lego V8 32-Valve Engine’…)

Plantronics Tries to Patent Nod Powered Headset
Wireless headsets are convenient but having to charge them regularly is not. Headset manufacturer Plantronics agrees. The company has filed for an interesting patent for a headset that will be powered through movement of the head. That includes "subtle nods, turns and shaking," as well as physical activity such as "walking, running, climbing stairs, riding in a vehicle, riding a horse, riding a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, skiing and climbing a mountain."  According to the patent, the headset would comprise a processor, an acoustic transducer, and a kinetic energy converter coupled to a power cell for powering the headset. NextWorth - Trade in or sell your old iPod or iPhone

NextWorth - Trade in or sell your old iPod or iPhone
Kanchana ’s recent article on Abunda Trade reminded me of NextWorth which actually pays you cold hard cash for your gently used ipod or iphone or lets you trade them in for an upgrade. For example, you can get a trade-in value of over $200 for a 1st Gen iPhone (16GB). Customers simply enter the model and condition of their current iPhone or iPod online and a value is calculated based on the entered model and condition. Once the customer accepts the estimate, NextWorth sends a box, the customer sends the device and a certified check will arrive in seven to 14 days. It certainly is safer than selling independently. If you’ve tried it, let us know. (Read the full post about ‘NextWorth - Trade in or sell your old iPod or iPhone’…)

Stock tumble hits tech biz hard

Stock tumble hits tech biz hard
Yesterday’s stock tumble has hit tech businesses hard. Nasdaq, which is primarily tech businesses, fell nearly 200 points, and several big tech businesses saw similar drops.  Apple fell 18%, AMD nearly 17%, and Intel over 10%. Similarly, Google saw its stock fall over $50 to $381 a share. That’s nearly a 12% drop. “Apple’s business is driven by the consumer, and the consumer is getting hurt because of higher oil prices” that leave less money for cool gadgets, said Trip Chowdhry, an analyst at Global Equities Research in San Francisco. Large enterprises, such as airlines and shipping-dependent retailers, also have less money to invest in IT, he added. (Read the full post about ‘Stock tumble hits tech biz hard’…)

Kim Cattrall To Offer Directions to TomTom Users
Now this takes GPS navigation to a different level. Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall, better known as Samantha Jones to her fans, will be offering navigation instructions in her breathy voice to TomTom navigation device owners. That should be an interesting change from the robotic generic voice that blares out directions in most GPS devices. The idea is to add "some spice to the ride, allowing drivers a fun and unforgettable journey," says TomTom, which is locked in a fierce battle with rival Garmin for market share. On the road, Cattrall’s voice will give more than the standard instructions such as "Turn left" or "Drive 2.4 miles and then take a right." She will say lines such as "This is the city, darling. Critter Cruiser and Hamtrack: Hamster Humiliation

Posted on September 30th, 2008 in Gadgets News | Comments Off

The Critter Cruiser and Hamtrack is a tatty, plastic update of the game my childhood neighbor and I used to play with his own pet hamster (which he named, with a beautiful nerd irony beyond his years, “Ham Tyler”). The Cruiser is a hamster exercise wheel slotted into a car. The hamster carries out his traditional futile scamperings to move the car along the accompanying Hamtrack, thus providing entertainment for humans, frustration for nearby cats and complete humiliation for the rodent.

Good, clean fun, certainly, but nothing compared to my friend’s homemade hamster game. Ham Tyler would stand in the back of an RC truck, front paws on the rollbar, and we’d send him speeding around the living room.

Synaptics introduce ChiralRotate and Two-Finger Flick
Synaptics has announced new gestures to join its expanding portfolio of gesture recognition capabilities, with the ChiralRotate and Two-Finger Flick taking the limelight. Just in case Synaptics rings a bell, that’s because its TouchPads are often found in popular notebook brands as well as peripheral keyboards, and in light of Apple’s multi-touch capability on its iphone and ipod touch, it makes perfect sense for Synaptics to do something about the situation and shore up their portfolio.
